Campus Crime Statistics
Campus Security Act
These reports, prepared in compliance with the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act, outline the university’s security policies and disclose campus crime statistics.
This federal law was originally passed in 1990 as part of the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act. It was amended in 1992 and 1998 by the Higher Education Amendment. It requires all institutions of higher education that receive federal financial assistance to produce an annual security report distributed to all current students and employees and a summary available to all prospective students and employees.
Campus crime, arrest, and referral statistics include those reported to the University Police Department, designated campus officials, and local law enforcement agencies. Prompt reporting to the local law enforcement agency by health care professionals is mandatory if the care provider suspects or reasonably suspects that the person seeking treatment has suffered wounds inflicted by a firearm or suffered assaultive or abusive conduct. Counseling services inform their clients of the procedures to report crimes to the police voluntarily or confidentially should they feel it is in the client's best interest.
More specifically, the law requires the reporting of violent crimes, burglary, arson, motor vehicle theft, and a summary of arrests and disciplinary referrals for liquor law, drug abuse, and weapons violations:
- murder
- manslaughter
- sex offenses
- forcible (rape, sodomy, rape with a foreign object, forcible fondling and sexual battery)
- nonforcible (incest and statutory rape)
- robbery
- aggravated assault
- burglary
- motor vehicle theft
- arson
- domestic violence
- dating violence
- stalking
- hate crimes (where evidence reflects victim selection based on actual or perceived race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability)
- arrests or persons referred for campus disciplinary action for liquor law violations, drug abuse violations, and weapons possession
