What began as a minor interest for Presley Bell soon evolved into a major focus in both academics and career goals

Presley Bell, a senior communication major, did not begin college with the intention of pursuing a career in social media and marketing. Communication was originally selected as a minor due to an interest in “talking to people, enjoying writing, and always liking English classes,” as Bell explained. After enrolling in several communication courses and connecting with both the material and the professors, a shift in academic focus led to declaring Communication as a major.

Understanding the value of gaining hands-on experience, Bell secured an internship during the summer of 2024, working as a social media intern for a Senate campaign. Later, during junior year, a peer and former intern with the University of South Carolina Aiken’s Communication Department recommended Bell for the department’s social media and events coordinator internship. Since the Communication major included a capstone requirement, the internship aligned well with Bell’s academic goals. The idea was revisited when capstone planning began, ultimately resulting in an internship offer.

As the Social Media and Events Coordinator, Bell oversaw the department’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. Other tasks included designing visually engaging content through Canva and highlighting students, alumni, and faculty members. Reflecting on the role, Bell noted growth in both creativity and audience engagement strategies. Data from posts showed that personal spotlight features drew the most interaction, measured through likes and other engagement metrics.

When asked to share advice for students considering internships, Bell emphasized, “An internship can jazz up your resume. It makes a big difference to show you have prior experience. It can also help you make connections.” Though post-graduation plans remain uncertain, Bell feels optimistic that, just as the unexpected decision to major in Communication turned out to be rewarding, a similarly exciting opportunity will emerge after graduation in December.
